DESERT SKY TUTORING PROGRAM

Elements

Desert Sky Tutoring offers several program elements, encompassing reading comprehension, writing (SAT/ACT writing, expository writing, summarizing, persuasive writing, friendly letters, business, letters, college-entrance essay writing, personal narratives, descriptive writing, creative writing, poetry writing), vocabulary enrichment, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure variation, spelling, making inferences, identifying literary elements, making predictions, critical thinking skills, organizational skills, and study skills.

Daily assignments improve study habits and build academic skills—generally about 30 to 45 minutes of homework per day.

Quality literature, full of rich vocabulary and literary elements, is part of the program.  Miss Allie will choose the perfect-level book—often a Newbery or Caldecott award winner—as part of your child’s tutoring program, along with various teacher-made corresponding  materials.

Miss Allie favors published materials from Sadlier-Oxford publishing company, such as Vocabulary Workshop and Grammar Workshop, Composition Workshop, and Writing a Research Paper to complement her program.  Also, she uses Wordly Wise by School Specialty, Novel Ties, and her own, teacher-made materials.

SAT and ACT  Preparation

College Admissions

Miss Allie works with students grades 9 through 12 to enhance their reading comprehension and knowledge of mechanics to prepare them for the language arts and writing portions of both the ACT and SAT tests.  She also assists students in writing college admissions essays.

Valuable test-taking strategies, as well as assistance with acquiring the essay-writing skills necessary to attain a perfect score on the writing portions, will be provided.  Miss Allie uses SAT obsolete tests to help her students learn to determine why some answer choices work and why other answer choices are incorrect.  Your son or daughter will better understand how to tackle difficult reading excerpts, how to narrow down the possible answers to just two choices, how to eliminate wrong answers that clearly do not work, and how to manage time during the test.  Having a “bag of tricks” to use while test taking is invaluable!

Miss Allie spent a summer teaching SAT preparation at the southern California SAT-prep institute, Elite Prep, Fullerton, and gained valuable knowledge and skills to help kids achieve higher scores and improve their chances of being accepted at their top-choice universities.  SAT and ACT scores matter to college admissions departments!

Early-Education Program

Miss Allie has helped young children, ages 3 to 5, build reading-readiness skills, such as sequencing, picture recognition, phonics, blending, and oral language development.  Help your young one get a HEAD START with a private tutoring session once or twice per week.  The Desert Sky Tutoring English language tutoring program is ESPECIALLY helpful when the primary language spoken at home is NOT English.
